Examples of diseases of affluence include mostly chronic non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and other physical health conditions for which personal lifestyles and societal conditions associated with economic development are believed to be an important risk factor — such as type 2 diabetes, asthma, coronary heart disease, cerebrovascular disease, peripheral vascular disease, obesity, hypertension, cancer, alcoholism, gout, and some types of allergy. They may also be considered to include depression and other mental health conditions associated with increased social isolation and lower levels of psychological well being observed in many developed countries. Many of these conditions are interrelated, for example obesity is thought to be a partial cause of many other illnesses.

Factors associated with the increase of these conditions and illnesses appear to be things that are a direct result of technological advances. They include:

  • Increased use of motorized vehicles
  • Sitting all day long in office jobs
  • Higher consumption of vegetable oils
  • High intake of sugar-containing foods
  • Higher consumption of meat and dairy products
  • Higher consumption of refined flours, white bread and noodles
  • Processed food
  • Greater use of alcohol and tobacco

Deaths by Cause

Looking at the annual number of deaths by cause world wide it becomes obvious, that the big numbers are connected to the above mentioned diseases of affluence. Look at the first entry in the graph: Cardiovascular diseases. This is the number one biggest killer in the world. It is neither terrorism nor crocodiles.

No, the causes for cardiovascular diseases are rather:

  • High blood pressure
  • High cholesterol
  • Smoking
  • Poor diet
  • Little physical inactivity
  • Excessive alcohol use

Death is always influenced by health

We could ask the other way around too: Which of the topics in the list are not influenced by your health? If your health was in perfect condition, don´t you think, you would be better of with any of these conditions, in any of these situations?

Look at a natural disaster. Maybe you would be able to run away? Or maybe you would catch the danger one split second before, just soon enough to get away?

Or with terrorism. Maybe a sound nervous system would be calm enough to stay cool even at gunpoint?
